Christmas crackers also known as bon-bons are an essential  part of any Christmas celebrations. A cracker originally consisted of a cardboard tube  vibrantly decorated with a  twist of paper, making it appear like a giant sweet-wrapper.  The cracker is pulled by two people, and a contains a joke, paper christmas hat and small toy at the start of a meal.
The Cracker was invented by Thomas J Smith in 1847 in London as a marketing ploy for bon bons and  is closely linked with the sweet wrapper. Originally containing just sweets, over time the Christmas cracker evolved to contain other objects and puller cracks to create a bang to mimic the sound of a crackling fire.
